Warli Workshops
The workshops are led by Julie Ann Roberts who has 15 years experience of working with children from all backgrounds.
Design and paint a Warli Canvas
Suitable for 4 -11 year olds. The workshop can be for a morning, afternoon or a whole day. The longer the session the more historical detail will be discussed and a greater understanding of the Warli art will be gained. For each session paper, paint, brushes and canvases will be needed. The classroom surfaces will need to be cleared to provide drying areas and tables need to be covered for painting. Children will need aprons and space to work on their tables. A morning or afternoon session will be for approximately 2 hours with a short break. The session will start with a discussion about the Warli Tribe and their art. I will then ask them to paint their canvases with teracotta paint. While the canvases are drying the children will be introduced to the use of symbols in their work and will practise, on paper, replicating some of them. A small design will be produced based on the exact Warli art. After break the children will be asked to produce a more contemporary design based on their own enviroment. Their final designs will be painted onto canvas board or stretchers. In the 2 hour sessions the canvases may not be completed so class teachers will be expected to work on the canvases in further art sessions. If a full day workshop is booked then canvases will be completed and extra design work will be fullfilled.
Design and Paint a Warli Mural
Suitable for 4-11 year olds. The workshop is for 2 days - 1 week depending on the size of mural required.
For the design session, paper and pencils will be needed. The classroom surfaces will need to be cleared to provided design areas for the children. A morning or afternoon session will be for approximately 2 hours with a short break. The session will start with a discussion about the Warli and their art. The children will be introduced to the use of symbols in thier work and will practice on paper, replicating some of them. A design will be produced based on the exact Warli art. After break the children will be asked to produce a more contemporary design based on their own enviroment. Their designs will be amalgamated to produce a final mural image. The design session should last about 2 hours.
The mural wall should be prepared in advance. The wall should be flat and painted with white paint (exterior paint if it is outdoors). The wall should be easily accessible to the children and in a situation that can be cordoned off during painting. High sections of the wall will be painted by myself or teachers who wish to be involved. In the afternoon selected children will be asked to help to paint the wall with teracotta paint. On the second day the design will be draughted and painted with assistance from small groups of children from the class. Each group, of approx 4 - 5 children should get 1/2 hrs painting. If outside, the final mural should be painted with exterior varnish after completion. This could be done by a teacher or caretake once the mural has dried.
Warli Ceramics Workshop

The classroom surfaces will need to be cleared and covered to provided drying areas. Children will need aprons and space to work on their tables.
