Numeracy Mural

Manor Special Needs School. This 200ft exterior mural had an underwater theme and incorporated a numeracy game where hoops are thrown at numbered hooks in the wall.

Suitable for 4-15 year olds. The design session will last 2 hours and must be done in advance of the mural. The painting will take from 1 day - 1 week depending on size and complexity. All students take part in painting the mural. For the design session, paper and pencils will be needed and classroom surfaces will need to be cleared. The session will start with a discussion about numeracy and art. The children will be shown examples of the use of numbers and symbols in famous art works and will use these ideas in their own designs. Their drawings will be amalgamated to produce a final mural design.

An interior or exterior wall within the school premises will need to be prepared in advance for the mural. The wall should be flat and painted with white paint (exterior paint if it is outdoors). The wall should be easily accessible to the children and in a location that can be blocked off during painting. High sections of the wall will be painted by myself or teachers who wish to be involved. During the painting selected small groups of children will be asked to help to paint the wall. Each group, of approx 4 - 5 children should get 1/2 - 1 hour painting. If outside, the final mural should be painted with exterior varnish after completion. This should be done by a teacher or caretaker once the mural has dried.

Stonebridge Regeneration Mural painted by 4-11 year olds onto pieces of 6ftx4ft hardboard. Stonebridge Estate was being regenerated and the mural was moved around the community to stimulate discussion about the design of their surroundings.
